Lost All Your Car Keys? What to Do, Step by Step (UK Guide)
Lost all your car keys? Don't panic. It is stressful, but it is a common problem with a clear fix. This guide walks you through what to do, in the right order, so you can get back on the road.
Step 1: Search properly before you assume they're gone
Most "lost" keys turn up. Before you spend any money, spend 15 minutes on a calm search.
- Retrace your steps from the last time you used the car.
- Check coat pockets, bags, the car itself, and anywhere you empty your pockets.
- Check between sofa cushions, in laundry, and in the bin.
- Ask anyone who has driven the car or been in your home.
- Call places you visited, such as shops, cafes and gyms.
Step 2: Make sure the car is safe
If you think your keys were stolen, or you lost them somewhere unsafe, think about security. Someone could have your keys and your address. If you are worried, report it to the police and tell your insurer. Keep the car locked and, if you can, stored out of sight.
Step 3: Gather your details
To get the right replacement key, have these ready:
- Your registration number (number plate).
- Make, model and year of the car.
- Proof you own the car, such as your V5C logbook and photo ID. A reputable locksmith will ask for this.
- A photo of the old key, if you have one, such as a spare or a picture on your phone.
Step 4: Find the right replacement key
This is where most people get stuck. Modern car keys come in several types, and the wrong one will not work on your car.
- Remote key (flip key or fob): locks and unlocks the car with buttons, and often starts it too.
- Transponder key: a key with a chip inside that tells the engine it is allowed to start.
- Key case (shell): the outer casing. Useful if yours is worn or broken but the electronics still work.
The easiest way to get it right is to search by your number plate. At The Car Key Shop, type your reg into our reg search and we show you the keys that fit your vehicle. No reg to hand? Use the same page to search by make, model and year.
Step 5: Get the key programmed by an experienced auto locksmith
This is the step people often miss. When all keys are lost, a new key must be programmed to your car before it will start it. That needs specialist equipment and skill.
We recommend using an experienced auto locksmith. A good auto locksmith can often come to you, which saves arranging recovery. They can cut the blade if needed and program the key on site.
Please note: The Car Key Shop sells keys online only and we do not program keys. We supply the key. Your locksmith does the rest.
Tips when choosing a locksmith
- Ask for a clear quote before they start.
- Ask if they have experience with your make and model.
- Tell them you plan to supply your own key. Some will happily work with a key you have bought, but always check first.
- Ask what ID they need from you.
In Yorkshire? Our sister business, Turnkey Auto Solutions, is a mobile auto locksmith covering Pontefract, Wakefield, Leeds, Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield, York and the surrounding areas. Wherever you are, use the tips above to choose any locksmith.
Step 6: Order a spare straight away
Once the locksmith has sorted you out, get a spare. A spare costs far less than starting from scratch with no keys at all. Keep it somewhere safe at home, not in the car.
Thinking about it now? Find a spare key for your car before you need one.
How to avoid losing all your keys again
- Keep your spare key at home, in a safe place.
- Add a bright key ring or a tracker to your main key.
- Always put your keys in the same place when you get in.
- Take a photo of your key and keep your V5C safe.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a new key if I've lost all my keys?
Yes. You will need a replacement key that suits your car, and it must be programmed by an auto locksmith before it will start the engine.
Do I need proof of ownership?
Usually, yes. Expect to show your V5C logbook and photo ID so the locksmith knows the car is yours.
Can I buy the key myself and have a locksmith program it?
Often, yes. Buying the right key online and using a locksmith to program it is a common route. Check with your locksmith first that they are happy to work with a key you supply.
Will my old lost keys still work?
Locksmiths can often remove old keys from the car's system when programming a new one, so lost keys can no longer start it. Ask your locksmith about this, especially if your keys were stolen.
How do I know which key fits my car?
Use our reg search. Enter your number plate and we show the keys that match your vehicle.
